The coupon uses Grade 350 steel, Bis80, and L1B cast steel (or equivalent).

Mining Welder Competency can supply certified coupons.

You can prepare your own coupons also, but you must provide material certificates or chemical analysis results to prove that the correct materials have been used

Dimensions of the coupon and plate thickness is provided in the Instructions.

The coupon design is similar for both Level 1 and Level 2, although the joint types used are different and Level 2 uses a AISI 1042 insert

Accredited Supervisor Click to expand

The assessment can only be carried out under the supervision of an Accredited Supervisor.  This is because it is necessary for the Supervisor to know what to inspect and what data to record that is required for the assessment process. Also, an Accredited Supervisor ensures that there is no cheating - especially for the root runs and backing strip.

Please contact Mining Welder Competency if you are interested in becoming an Accredited Supervisor

Jig

A custom jig is recommended for the competency assessment in order to provide a comfortable and safe set-up. MWC can provide a jig (for a fee) or can provide instructions for how to build your own.

Root cover piece

It is necessary to cover the weld roots in order to simulate a single sided repair where there is no access or visibility to the internal side. This can be achieved a few different ways, and the MWC or an Accredited Supervisor can provide guidance for how this can be done.

Welding Equipment

You will require the following welding equipment

The Welder should have with them all the necessary tools and consumables that they would normally have on the job.  Note that a burr grinder is required in order to clean up the weld prep in the restricted areas.

The welding consumables required are as per the URPS for each of the three material groups
